2,350-year-old Cybele statue discovered in Edremit

A 2,350-year-old Cybele statue has been discovered in the Antandros Ancient City located in the Edremit district of Balıkkesir province.

News Center- A Cybele statue was discovered in the Antandros Ancient City located in the Altinoluk neighborhood of Balıkesir’s Edremit district during the excavation work carried out in the ancient city. The statue with lion figures on both sides and on her lap is 30 cm high and has a marble structure. Although the statue has no head, it is understood that it is a Cybele statue.

Archaeologists, who carried out the excavation work in Antandros Ancient City for more than 15 days, said that they found a statue that was used as a wall stone on the walls of the Roman villa. “Unfortunately, it is not fully preserved. This is a marble statuette with a height of 30 centimeters. Its head is unfortunately not preserved. But as far as it is preserved, we understand that it is a statue of Cybele. There are lion figures on both sides of the Cybele statue sitting on the throne, and the yellow part of another lion is preserved on her lap.”
