Release of Jawhara Shenn amid escalating protests demanding justice and freedom of expression
The release of activist Jawhara Shenn in Tunisia, amid escalating protest vigils supporting her, which demand the release of the activists of the “Steadfastness Fleet” and an end to their prosecution.
News Center – Activist Jawhara Shenn is one of the seven members of the steering committee of the “Steadfastness Fleet” to break the siege on Gaza, against whom the Tunisian judiciary issued a decision to detain them as part of investigations conducted by the financial judicial pole regarding suspicions related to tax evasion and money laundering.
The “Steadfastness Fleet” to break the siege on Gaza announced yesterday that the Tunisian authorities released activist Jawhara Shenn, while activist Ghassan Henchiri remains detained, noting that both had previously appeared before the investigating judge at the financial judicial pole in the capital, Tunis.
This development comes after the Tunisian judiciary released activist Sanaa Mesbahi, while keeping six others in detention. On March 16 of last year, the judicial authorities ordered the detention of seven members of the steerting committee of the “Steadfastness Fleet” based on investigations related to tax evasion and money laundering.
Months ago, the fleet participated in a voyage as part of the "Global Steadfastness Fleet" in an attempt to break the siege on the Gaza Strip following the war it witnessed, before its ships were raided by Israeli forces, who arrested hundreds of activists and later deported them, amid testimonies of being subjected to assaults.
The list of detainees includes: Wael Nawwar, Nabil Chennoufi, Ghassan Henchiri, Ghassan Boughediri, Mohamed Amine Bennour, Jawhara Shenn, and Sanaa Mesbahi. The committee affirms that all charges against its members are "false" and demands their release.
This release coincides with escalating protest movements in the capital, Tunis, where civil society activists organized solidarity vigils demanding the release of the remaining detainees, affirming that the prosecution of Jawhara Shenn and her colleagues comes as a result of their civil activism in support of the Palestinian cause.
